My favorite red lipsticks

Red LipstickI will admit – I am late to the red lipstick game. I was always intimidated by red, and I never thought it would look good on me. Now, I love rocking a red lip – the trick is finding one that is right for you (and one that makes your teeth look nice and white).  Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. MAC – Ruby Woo – the iconic red lipstick from MAC. The one that I refer to as my daytime red. It is a pain to put on – it is one of the Retro Mattes – (I typically need a lip primer or lip balm on first), but once it goes on, it lasts.
  2. MAC – Russian Red – the one created for Madonna’s Blonde Ambition tour, another fantastic red. It is darker than Ruby Woo and much easier to put on, but it doesn’t last as long as Ruby Woo.
  3. MAC – Viva Glam Sia – this was an impulse buy. It is not as deep as Russian Red, and, for lack of a better description, more yellow than Ruby Woo (so keep that in mind if your teeth are yellowish). This one has staying power comparable to Russian Red.
  4. Nyx Matte Lipstick – Perfect Red – this is the color that comes to mind when I think of red lipstick. Matte finish that lasts for a while without the high price tag.
  5. Nyx Pin Up Pout – Red Haute – a creamier lipstick that is slightly darker than MAC Russian Red. Great color, but doesn’t last long.
  6. Nyx Pin Up Pout – Lucy – Same as number 5 (creamier, great color), it is brighter than Ruby Woo.
  7. Laura Mercier Extreme – Dominate – this comes in a long stick format instead of the typical lipstick bullet, and that it the reason I like it. It goes on really easily (you have more control than a normal bullet), the color is amazing, and the lasting power is similar to that of Russian Red.
  8. Lorac Pro – Ruby – brighter than Dominate, this too comes in the long stick format – which means more control putting it on. Lasting power is also similar to that of Russian Red.
  9. Charlotte Tilbury – Red Carpet Red – this one surprised me. It is creamy and the color is gorgeous, but it was brighter than I expected on my lips (I expected it to be a very dark red, and it is – to a point – but it really is brighter). It has similar staying power to the Nyx Pin Up Pouts.

Red lipsticks are awesome, you can rock them with a blazer and a pair of jeans. You can rock them with a cocktail dress. It is a quick and easy way to charge up your look, but I highly recommend not kissing anyone while you are wearing them (except for Ruby Woo – you can get away with lightly kissing someone). Otherwise, both you and your kissing partner may wind up looking like a way messier version of Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

On a side note, some of these lipsticks can be pricey, so try to find reward programs or discount codes to help bring the price down.

My favorite lip glosses

I love lip gloss. The very first makeup that I was allowed to use as a girl. It is a great way to look polished and still look casual. It is pretty much fool proof. You can swipe it on, no mirror required. It’s what I rock, even if I put on no other makeup.

My personal favorites are the sheer, shimmery ones. While the opaque glosses can be really pretty, they are almost impossible for me to keep looking neat. Once I put it on, I don’t want to think too much about it.

Here are my current favorites:

  1. Nyx – Pump It Up Lip Plumper – a great, inexpensive gloss. It has nice shine and a good applicator (the doe foot – my favorite type). Jessica is my go to color.
  2. MAC – Dazzleglass – this one is the thickest of the three, but it provides the best shine and it lasts the longest (and not a great gloss if you want to kiss someone). The one thing I don’t like about it is the applicator (it’s a brush as opposed to the doe foot). Go For Gold is my go to color, but there are a lot to choose from.
  3. Buxom – Full On Lip Polish – this one feels cool and tingly when you apply. It is not as thick as the Dazzleglass, thicker than the Pump It Up Lip Plumper, and it has the doe foot applicator (YAY). There are a lot of colors to choose from (the largest variety of the three – I think), but Princess is my go to color.

No matter what lip gloss you use, own it! Remember, you look gorgeous!

My Top Five Favorite Pixiwoo YouTube Videos

I like Pixiwoo best when it comes to makeup tutorials – Sam and Nic (the sisters behind Pixiwoo) provide YouTube videos that are as entertaining as they are informative.  Here are my top five favorite videos (in no particular order)

  1. Makeup SOS – 3 Fast Looks – I have used tips from this video to quickly update my makeup for a night out after work!
  2. Bright Lips and Easy Hair – I love the minimalism of the makeup with the strong lip – I have worn similar looks to work many times.
  3. Youthful Day Makeup – Just a great, easy look to pull off.
  4. Makeup for When You’re Hungover But You Still Gotta Work – How to look good when you feel like crap. Who doesn’t want that?
  5. Film Noir Makeup and Hair – Because no matter what, makeup is a lot of fun.

The videos listed above all feature Sam, but Nic does great tutorials too. Please check them out, I think they are both amazing!

The start of the spring running season

Today was the St. Paddy’s Day run in Deer Park. I ran a 5K, and my fiancé ran the 10K. It reminded me that I still have a lot of work to do for the 10K on April 7th!

For the most part, the run was not that bad (it was cold – 32 degrees Fahrenheit) – the worst part about it was decently hilly (especially one area).

My goal was to run the entire time without stopping, and to beat my previous record (I have only run one 5K previously). To that end, I have accomplished my goal. I wish that my pace was faster, but that will come with time (and training).

I have three more spring 5K runs after my 10K, so I still have a decent amount of training to do. Now it’s just remaining focused on that, and preventing any injuries.

Review – Tarte: Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer

“Want to create that perfect seamless, sunkissed radiance?”

I have struggled with bronzers in the past. My skin is medium in tone and it’s pretty oily (even though I am over 40).

Inexpensive bronzers have a tendency to turn orange as the day goes on. Fortuately, that is not the issue here.

The color is gorgeous and buildable. It lasts all day. It’s wonderfully blendable, so it really looks natural on me (although, I do think it will not show up as well on darker skin tones).

It is my favorite bronzer (ever) – and, can I say again, IT DOES NOT MAKE ME LOOK ORANGE!!!

It’s not cheap, but I do not regret my purchase.
